The home sleep test

A night in a sleep laboratory, wired to monitors, is not how most people sleep. Our test is a small ring you wear in your own bed, prescribed by telehealth, picked up the same day or shipped to your door.

How the ring works

The sensor is a disposable ring from SleepImage, worn on a finger overnight. It records your heart rhythm and blood oxygen through the night, and from those signals the test detects the pauses and shallow breaths of sleep apnea and the brief awakenings they cause. There are no wires, no nasal tubes and no chest bands, so you sleep the way you normally do, in your own bed.

What the night looks like

  1. A telehealth visit. Our nurse practitioner talks with you about your sleep and your health and prescribes the test.
  2. Your ring. Pick it up the same day at the office, or we ship it to your home within three to five business days.
  3. Bedtime. Put the ring on before you go to sleep, snug but comfortable, and connect it to the app on your phone if you have one.
  4. Sleep as usual. The ring records on its own.
  5. The morning. Take it off. The app shows your sleep quality and patterns; the full report goes to us.

What happens next

We go through your results with you at a follow-up visit and explain what the numbers mean: whether you have sleep apnea, how severe it is, and what we recommend. For many people the next step is a custom oral appliance. When CPAP, a laboratory study or a physician’s care is the better path, we say so and help arrange it.

Before you order a test

  • Tell us about any heart or lung condition, and any medicines that make you sleepy.
  • If you have had a sleep study before, bring it; a new test may not be needed.
  • If a partner has seen you stop breathing at night, say so. It is the most telling sign there is.

Questions patients ask

Is a home test as accurate as a sleep laboratory?

For adults whose symptoms point to obstructive sleep apnea, the sleep medicine guideline supports home testing as a first step. A laboratory study records more and is the right test when central sleep apnea or another sleep disorder is suspected, or when a home test comes back unclear. We tell you which applies to you.

Who prescribes the test and who reads it?

Our nurse practitioner prescribes the test at a short telehealth visit. Your results are reviewed before your follow-up, and we go through them with you in plain language.

What if I already use a CPAP?

Bring your original sleep study and tell us how the CPAP has gone. You may not need a new test to be considered for an oral appliance.

Does insurance cover it?

Sleep testing is medical care. We accept major medical insurance and Medicare and we check your benefits before the test is ordered.
